Industrial Fermentation: Biofuels, Bioreactors, Microorganisms

Industrial fermentation underpins the production of biofuels, detergent enzymes, and industrial proteins at scale. Prof. Krist Gernaey from DTU brings his expertise to demystify this complex world—from the biology of microorganisms to the engineering challenges of bioreactor scale-up.

In this episode

  • What industrial fermentation is: using microorganisms in bioreactors of up to hundreds of cubic metres to make enzymes, biofuels and proteins
  • How a process is scaled up from a small lab experiment to production, and why biologists and process engineers have to work together
  • How enthusiastic professors at Ghent University drew Krist into science, and his path from lab work on microbes to mathematical modelling, via Montreal and Lund, to a professorship at the Technical University of Denmark
  • What balancing a scientific career with raising a family really looks like
  • The projects he picked: BioPro, an industry and academia project that led to around ten startups, and a new enzyme-free sensor that uses nanomaterials to measure glucose in fermentations
  • His three wishes: less time spent applying for funding, starting on fermentation earlier, and 30-hour days

Key Takeaways

⚗️ Industrial Fermentation at Scale — Unlike domestic fermentation, industrial processes run in substantial bioreactors, producing biofuels, enzymes, and proteins economically.

🏭 The Central Role of the Bioreactor — The bioreactor is the controlled environment where microorganisms transform raw materials into valuable products. Optimising mixing and scaling from lab to industry is a core challenge.

🦠 Harnessing Microbial Power — Bacteria, yeast, and fungi are crucial biological catalysts. Understanding and optimising them is key to efficient, high-yield production.

🔬 The Journey from Lab to Industry — Translating fermentation technology from breakthrough to viable industrial process requires interdisciplinary collaboration and engineering ingenuity.

🇩🇰 Life at DTU — Prof. Gernaey’s work at DTU showcases the dynamic, collaborative nature of modern biotechnology research.
