Claude Skills Registry: Why Your Automation Library Needs One

A Claude skills registry prevents skill sprawl before it starts. Here's how I audit my automation library — and the pattern that makes it work.

I have been building Claude skills for about six months. What started as a handful of reusable workflows has grown into a library of over twenty skills — each one a Claude Code instruction file encoding a complete, repeatable process. At some point this year, I stopped knowing exactly what I had. Some skills were working perfectly. Others were quietly broken. A few had been replaced by better versions but never deleted.

That gap — between what I thought my Claude skills registry contained and what it actually contained — is the problem this post is about.

What a Claude skill actually is

I am using “skill” in the Claude Code sense: a custom Markdown instruction file that encodes a multi-step workflow as an invocable prompt. When I call a skill in Claude Code, it loads the full instructions and executes the defined sequence — research, gate approvals, file writes, deploy prompts, and all.

This is distinct from MCP servers, native connectors, or Claude’s built-in capabilities. A skill is closer to a standing operating procedure written in plain text. The benefit is consistency: complex workflows run the same way every time, without me rewriting the logic or remembering every step. The problem is that skills accumulate. Unlike code in a version-controlled repository with CI checks, skill files live in a folder that is easy to ignore until something goes wrong.

What skill sprawl actually looks like

I discovered three failure modes in my own library during my first proper audit.

Outdated skills are the most common. A skill I wrote to publish posts to my WordPress site assumed a specific plugin configuration that I later changed. The skill still ran — it just produced subtly wrong output that I had to fix manually. I caught it by accident, weeks after the underlying change. At volume, those errors would have compounded silently.

Duplicate skills emerge under time pressure. I had two separate skills for creating LinkedIn posts: one from an early iteration, one from a month later when I refined the approach. Both were still active. The outputs were inconsistent, and the reason was not obvious until I mapped what each skill actually did against the real workflow.

Orphaned skills are skills that no longer correspond to an active workflow. I had one built for a webinar format I stopped running. The file was still there, still appeared in the skills list, and occasionally confused me when I was scanning for the right tool. Dead weight with a misleading name.

None of these problems are catastrophic individually. Together, they mean that a library built to save time becomes a source of friction and unpredictable output.

The Claude skills registry pattern

The fix is simple in concept: maintain a registry.

A registry is a single source of truth for every skill in your library. Mine lives in a Google Sheet with two tabs — a Skills Registry (one row per skill, tracking status, version, last tested date, and a one-line description) and a Change Log (one row per change event, appended automatically each time a skill is modified).

The behaviour that makes the registry useful is the auto-trigger. Embedded at the bottom of each skill file is a short instruction: when this file is edited, prompt Pranoti to log the change. The prompt surfaces immediately after the edit:

“Skill updated. Want me to log this change to the Skills Registry? Reply yes to log it now, or skip to do it later.”

This takes thirty seconds. Over six months, the change log becomes a genuine record of when each skill was last touched, what changed, and why. The Skills Registry tab answers the question I kept failing to answer from memory: What do I currently have, and is any of it broken?

How to run a skills audit

I run mine quarterly. The process has three parts.

Part one: inventory check. Compare the registry against the actual skill files on disk. Any skill that exists on disk but is missing from the registry gets added or deleted. Any registry entry pointing to a file that no longer exists gets archived. This takes about fifteen minutes and surfaces orphaned skills immediately.

Part two: recency filter. Flag any skill that has not been used in ninety days. This does not mean automatic deletion — some skills are seasonal. But it triggers a check: is this workflow still active? If the process the skill supported has been replaced or retired, archive the skill and note the reason in the log.

Part three: end-to-end test. For each active skill, run it once against a realistic test case and verify the output. This is where outdated skills surface — the ones that were correct when written but have drifted from the current state of the tools or workflows they depend on. For skills that touch external systems like WordPress, Google Sheets, or MailerLite, an end-to-end test is the only reliable check. Reading the skill file is not enough.

The audit generates a short action list: skills to update, skills to archive, skills to merge. On a library of twenty-plus skills, the first audit takes two to three hours. Subsequent quarterly audits take thirty to forty-five minutes.

What the registry reveals about how you work

The most useful thing the registry gives me is not the audit process itself — it is the visibility.

Looking at the Change Log over several months, I can see which skills I iterate on frequently (high value, actively evolving) and which I have not touched since they were written (either perfectly stable, or unused). I can see where I duplicated effort and built parallel tools for the same job. I can identify the skills that underpin my most critical workflows — the ones that should be treated as infrastructure, not casually edited, with a test run before and after any modification.

This is governance, not overhead. Every organisation that builds internal tools learns this lesson eventually: a tool you cannot inventory is a tool you cannot trust. The registry makes the difference between a skills library — managed, auditable, trustworthy — and a skills folder — a pile of Markdown files of uncertain provenance and unknown status.

For consultants and knowledge workers building serious automation with Claude Code, the principle is the same as for any software asset. The skills you rely on most need the most rigorous maintenance, not the least.

When to start

The right time to start a registry is when you write your second skill. The second-best time is now.

If you have more than five skills and no registry, your first audit will be uncomfortable. You will find things that are wrong or outdated that you assumed were working. That discomfort is the point — better to find it in a scheduled review than in the middle of a client deliverable.

Start with a simple spreadsheet. Two tabs: Registry and Change Log. Five columns in the Registry: skill name, slug, status (active/archived), last tested date, and a one-line description of what the skill does. You can add version tracking and dependency mapping later.

Embed the auto-log prompt in every skill file. A single line at the end of each Markdown file is enough: “When this skill is edited, prompt the user to log the change to the Skills Registry.” This converts maintenance from a separate task into a natural part of the edit workflow.

Run your first audit within the next month. Set a calendar block. The first audit is always the most revealing, and the corrections it generates make every subsequent audit faster and less surprising.

The goal is not a perfect registry from day one. It is a registry that makes your automation library more reliable than it was without one — and that compounds in value every quarter you maintain it.
