…now you need to comply with EU AI Act (article 50)

For scientists posting about their research on LinkedIn, Article 50 of the EU AI Act applies directly if they use AI to generate or manipulate their posts, unless they meet specific, strict exceptions.

IMPORTANT

If a scientist uses AI to generate or manipulate text for a LinkedIn post, it is legally considered “published text” because it is accessible to a large, indeterminate number of readers.

1. Text on “Matters of Public Interest” (Article 50(4))

  • Scientific developments with potentially important public implications are explicitly defined as matters of public interest.
  • If the purpose of the post is to inform the public on these scientific developments, the scientist must clearly disclose that the text has been artificially generated or manipulated. This includes using AI to write summaries or manipulate parts of academic papers.

2. Personal vs. Professional Activity

Under the Act, “deployer” obligations do not apply to natural persons using AI for purely personal, non-professional activities. However, a scientist posting about their professional research—especially if they are involved in a professional, academic, or freelance capacity, or if their post impacts public discourse—is considered to be conducting a professional activity. Thus, the scientist acts as a “deployer” and is subject to the rules.
