What I told scientists at DTU Denmark🇩🇰
Think it, write it, say it out loud
How to make your elevator pitch “stick”
Your elevator pitch = Your personal branding statement.
These are one or two sentences or maximum three sentences, which explain who you are what problem you are solving, and what is the impact of your effort. This is module 3 in my Personal Branding workshops.
Module 1 - Career goals framework where you set clear, actionable, ambitious career goals.
Module 2 - Audience mapping where you write down who exactly has the power to help you reach your career goals.
Module 3 - Personal branding statement where you get a clear formula to create your elevator pitch.
**Why is it important to draft your personal branding statement?**Because the way you would introduce yourself to your collaborator would be different from how you introduce yourself to your department head or how you would introduce yourself to a peer that you met at a conference. A lot of scientists miss out on this because when they end up in a situation where they have to introduce themselves, especially in real life, they’re like, oh yeah…, I’m a PhD student or Oh, I’m a postdoc…. and I’m working on this.
You have to remember that the person you’re speaking with has their own things. They have their own show going on in their own mind, so you need to be very clear as to - Who you are, what problem you’re working on, and how does it impact either the society or the community or whichever group that you’re solving this problem for.

This is what I told scientists at the DTU - Denmark Technical University 🇩🇰: You should be extremely comfortable when you are introducing yourself with your personal branding statement. The goal here is to make sure you do not fumble. But how to do this? Three very simple steps:
- Create your branding statement in your head, think about it.
- Write it down on a piece of paper with a pen. You can write it on your phone but I highly recommend the good old pen & paper.
- Say it out loud, to yourself. Or maybe record a voice memo of you saying it out loud. Say it in front of people you trust. You will be surprised by the encouraging response from your people 🧡
This is a sneak peek into my personal branding workshop and there’s lots more I cover in our 2 hours together. If you want to join my workshop then now is the time to book your spot. Next workshop is less than 14 days away.

Tips on how to cover registration fees👇
In most cases, your employer covers the cost of my Personal Branding Workshop as this counts as career development and soft-skill training.
If you’re a postdoc funded under the MSCA funding line of the European Commission then you get around € 1000 per month for these types of activities. So make sure you use this money to learn skills you need to thrive in academia.
If you’re a PhD researcher, then check with your supervisor or professor and they’ll help you with reimbursing the costs.
