why most social media advice doesn’t work for scientists

Hellooo!

Quick question for you: How many LinkedIn connections do you have?

Now the uncomfortable follow-up: How many of them could actually help your career?

(I’ll wait while you do the mental math. It’s humbling, I know.)

Here’s the thing. I’ve been training scientists  since 2019, and I keep seeing the same pattern. Brilliant researchers doing everything the social media gurus tell them — posting consistently, engaging with comments, growing their network — and wondering why nothing’s moving.

The problem isn’t their content. It’s that they skipped straight to step four.

Most trainings teach you HOW to post. Hooks, hashtags, consistency, all that jazz. Super useful! But that’s implementation. That’s decorating the house before you’ve poured the foundation.

What actually matters first:

Your career goal — and I don’t mean “increase my visibility” (that’s not a goal, that’s a vibe). I mean: Are you positioning for a faculty role? Trying to attract collaborators? Thinking about industry?

Your audience — the actual humans who can help you get there. Not “other scientists” but specific decision-makers and opinion leaders in your field.

Your platform — and here’s where it gets interesting. LinkedIn isn’t automatically the answer for everyone. A postdoc job-hunting and a tenure-track PI building thought leadership? Completely different strategies.

Get this sequence wrong and you end up posting into the void. Great content, wrong eyeballs. (I’ve done this. It’s frustrating and confusing and makes you want to give up entirely.)

One of my clients got 80,000+ views on a single post on LinkedIn The post was about their research paper. Not clever hacks — just clarity on who needed to see it.

I’ve finally put everything I know about this into one workshop: Personal Branding for Scientists in the Age of AI.

Two hours. Proper foundations. The kind of stuff you’ll use for the rest of your career, no matter what platform is hot next year.

You’ll walk away with:

  • A career goals framework (actual plan, not just wishes)
  • Your personal brand statement ready to copy-paste everywhere
  • Platform strategy that matches YOUR career stage
  • AI toolkit so you’re not spending hours on this
  • 48-hour action plan so you actually do something with it
