It's Time to Build Your Personal Brand
It’s not as painful as it sounds!

“I don’t know where to begin.”
I hear this often when I talk to scientists and professors about building their digital brands. I get it! This isn’t exactly what we signed up for when we became researchers. But if we want people to know about all the great work we’re doing in the lab, we’ve got to build an audience outside of it. We all need platforms where we can share our work and grow our networks.
How you do this depends on your professional and research goals, but you do have to begin somewhere.
I recommend starting with this key question: “What are your three unique features?” Maybe you’re working on a ground-breaking research project? Maybe you’re defined by your scientific expertise? There are no rules, but you have to know who you are and what makes you stand out before you expand your presence on LinkedIn or create a personal website.
This is the advice I gave to PhD students and professors who attended my talk at the Dortmund Graduate School of Physics last week – and I wanted to share it with you, too.
